10 reasons to use ITSM and 15 not to use IT Service Management

"...IT Service Management (ITSM) related costs account for between 65%-80% of all IT expenditure. Almost more than three quarters of every IT budget is spent keeping the application lights burning and the wheels of the IT machine turning. Most of this money goes on labor costs..."
Rob Addy, Effective IT Service Management

Addy also stated pro and cons between using ITSM or not, here’s the reason:

Why we should use ITSM

  1. Structured approach
  2. Good foundation upon which to build
  3. Analyst support/Easy ride for the CIO
  4. Can be used to help prevent knowledge loss from the organization
  5. Prescriptive nature means that you don’t have to think too Much
  6. Allows for job specialization
  7. Requires IT management to formally review all processes delivered by their teams
  8. Encourages the use of flow charting techniques to map out business processes
  9. Consistent usage of defined terminology across the industry promotes understanding and simplifies communication
  10. Traceability and accountability

Why we should not use ITSM

  1. Stifles creativity/innovation
  2. Food for consultants
  3. Diverts attention from real objectives/Becomes a goal in itself
  4. Allows senior management to pay lip service to real issues “We’re ITIL so we’re alright”
  5. Seen as a “Magic Pill”/“Silver bullet”
  6. Creates inertia/Can be used as an excuse for inactivity
  7. Lack of credible research into its effectiveness and value
  8. Doesn’t promote a continuous improvement culture
  9. “Best practices” by definition mean that you are only average
  10. Devised by bureaucrats for bureaucrats
  11. Creates arbitrary boundaries between functional groups
  12. Blind faith on the part of some managers that ITIL processes are the best way of working
  13. Lack of detail in some areas/Over prescriptive in others
  14. Fails to tie the provision of IT services back into the overall business goals and objectives
  15. Increased administrative burden

Any others suggestion?
